Laboratory for microbiology

Head: Sen. Lect. Anamarija Zore, Ph.D.

More information

Microbiology laboratory workers engage in the educational process and in the field of scientific research. It is our responsibility to provide and secure laboratory safety environment where the students become knowledgeable about the procedures of microbiologic investigations in the field of medical and public health microbiology, sanitary microbiology, natural environmental microbiology, microbiology of the working environment and food microbiology. Within the scope of the fields listed, the research and professional activities are being conducted. The different branches of microbiology are investigated into by baccalaureate, master's and doctoral theses. We actively engage in the projects, launched by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry for Agriculture, Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS), the Municipality of Ljubljana (MOL) through the public call for proposals. Effective collaboration has been established also with other institutions, like Biotechnical Faculty, Veterinary Faculty, Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, Educational Centre of Biotechnology, the Jožef Stefan Institute and some others.

Skills lab for radiography

Head: Asst. Prof. Nejc Mekiš, Ph.D.

More information

The mission of Radiology laboratory focuses on both research and education. It ensures the quality of the first and second cycle degree study programme implementation and produces competent, professional radiographers who can function effectively as members of the health care team. An important part of its mission is the development of radiologic technology as part of medical radiology through research, conducted on all educational levels. As ionising radiation presents a significant part of ionisation to which the population is exposed, the research objective is to define, design, and evaluate the impact of interventions to improve appropriate use of medical imaging by reducing its overuse, under-use and misuse. As we are aware that application of research findings is as important as the conduct of research itself, we try to communicate the research findings with the health care community at workshops and professional meetings and thus translate them into diverse applied settings.

Laboratory for physiotherapy

Head: Assoc. Prof. Alan Kacin, Ph.D.

More information

Physiotherapy laboratory mission is to scientifically evaluate the current physiotherapeutic methods and techniques and to develop new methods of prevention, ergonomics and physical treatment. We explore into the effects of physical activity and various physical agents (i.e. heat, pressure, light, gravitation and electromagnetism) on physiological mechanisms and working capacities of individuals. The implication of physical activity and physical agents on prevention and treatment of musculo-skeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular injuries/diseases and disorders is being systematically inquired into. The research is focused not only on basic scientific aspects of acute and chronic effects of physical activity and individual physical agents on autonomous (patho)physiological responses and body strength and endurance, but also on the application of relevant research findings. The long-term-goal of the physiotherapy laboratory is to make contribution towards the worldwide sustainable enhancement and development of the evidence-based physiotherapy practice.

Our research is therefore directed primarily towards:

  • the development of preventive and curative physiotherapeutic and ergonomic methods and
  • the scientific evaluation and upgrading of the extant physiotherapeutic and ergonomic methods.

The education and research should be closely linked in order to reach the stated goals. Accordingly, the students are being systematically involved in the scientific research process. In the years 2007 and 2008, the laboratory was granted financial support to implement the project 'The development and evaluation of new physiotherapeutic methods to achieve optimal muscle strength and endurance and the treatment of muscular atrophy.' The grants were used to fund also the highly specialised research equipment. The laboratory started to collaborate with other clinical and research institutions, such as Orthopaedic Clinic (Clinical Centre Ljubljana), the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, the University rehabilitation institute Soča and the The Jožef Stefan Institute. The laboratory members succeeded in presenting the results of the laboratory research at numerous professional seminars at home and abroad.

Laboratory of hygiene premises and processes

Head: Asst. Prof. Mojca Jevšnik, Ph.D.

More information

The Laboratory for hygiene of establishments and processes focuses primarily on basic and applicative research with respect to hygiene monitoring and control of the establishments, built environment, equipment, processes and working staff in the food supply chain and the health care system.

The laboratory takes on the following assignments:

  • the development of fast methods to conduct hygienic monitoring/control of establishments and built environment which fall under systematic health surveillance;
  • research into food safety assurance in food processing facilities (cold food chain, hand hygiene, materials intended for contact with food, establishment and verification of HACCP system);
  • research referring to the quality of air in the establishments which fall under systematic health surveillance;
  • validation of work processes and/or specific stages within the system of internal surveillance;
  • development of educational and food safety training methods for employees, who are in contact with food;
  • research into consumers' knowledge and awareness of food safety and food quality;

development of tools for the improvement of conditions in the food supply chain.
